Brake pads are an essential part of any vehicle's braking system and, without them, your car would not be able to halt or slow down effectively - meaning it would not be roadworthy. Brake pads that are wearing down will impact the performance of your vehicle, and you will likely be able to feel when they start to become less effective. They work when the brakes of your car are applied; the caliper squeezes the two pads on each wheel together against the spinning rotor. This slows or stops the motion of the wheel. If you feel your vehicle is not responding well to braking, it could be time to change your pads.
At Black Diamond, all of our brake pads are of the highest possible standard. Each pad has been made to meet the manufacturers' requirements to provide you with the highest performance and safest drive possible. We have access to an unrivalled selection of brake pads and other vehicle safety accessories and parts, meaning that we are able to offer you prices that are among the most competitive on the market. In the world of hot hatchbacks, the Audi A3 is a veteran performer with a reputation for both power and agility in a compact package. The look and certain internal hardware have changed since the first A3s rolled off the line in 1996, but the soul of the A3 is alive in well in the latest incarnations like the RS3 Sportback. Let's take a look at the history of this popular hatchback and how it has evolved since its three door, turbocharged days.
Commonly referred to in hot hatch circles as the Typ 8L, the earliest A3s were built on Volkswagen Group's PQ34 or A4 platform. This particular platform would prove to be the basis for many other compact Volkswagen group cars including the popular VW Golf MK4 that launched the same year. The distinguishing features of the first gen A3s was their three door hatchback configuration and available all-wheel drive.
The power plant for these early A3s was an inline four-cylinder transversely mounted, and sporting an innovative 5 valves per cylinder. In 1999, Audi added a 1.8L turbo 180PS (178 brake horsepower) motor, and a 1.9 TDI diesel motor with a unit injector they dubbed "Pumpe Duse" and a variable geometry turbocharger. Additionally, 1999 was the year they introduced a 5 door version of the A3 and their patented HAldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive used in the Audi S3 (A3 5-door sport model) and the sport coupe Audi TT. First generation A3s were so popular in Europe and South America that manufacture and sale of these sporty hatchbacks continued until 2003 in the UK and 2006 in Brazil.
The A3 got a facelift and newer chassis in 2003, and was dubbed the Typ 8P. Initial 2nd generation A3s were 3 door hatches with newer fuel-stratified injection (FSI) 1.8L motors and six speed manual gearboxes. Later that year, Audi offered a special 2.0L turbocharged FSI rated at 197 brake horsepower, and even a much more powerful VR6 motor that topped out at 247 brake horsepower. The newer 5-door Sportback models started the following year (2004) with a longer body and a more station wagon-like appearance. The A3 and S3s of the second generation may have looked more like daily drivers for the school run, but these were sporty powerhouses were an absolute treat to drive. There were a few cosmetic changes, but the 2.0L power plant and quattro all wheel drive systems remained mainstays of this fast and fun hatchback.
Audi offered a greater variety of model options for the third generation when it launched in 2012: the traditional and ever-popular 3-door hatchback, five-door Sportback, and a 4-door saloon designed to go toe-to-toe with Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class cars. Suspension got a major upgrade on third generation A3s, as did the safety and collision avoidance features. Current A3 2.0L TFSI motors can crank out up to 220 brake horsepower with 258 pound feet of torque. It's come a long way from its early days as a compact economy performance hatchback, but the spirit of fun and functionality remains true to the original design.
