Brake pads are an essential part of any vehicle's braking system and, without them, your car would not be able to halt or slow down effectively - meaning it would not be roadworthy. Brake pads that are wearing down will impact the performance of your vehicle, and you will likely be able to feel when they start to become less effective. They work when the brakes of your car are applied; the caliper squeezes the two pads on each wheel together against the spinning rotor. This slows or stops the motion of the wheel. If you feel your vehicle is not responding well to braking, it could be time to change your pads.
At Black Diamond, all of our brake pads are of the highest possible standard. Each pad has been made to meet the manufacturers' requirements to provide you with the highest performance and safest drive possible. Something of a curiosity in the compact car world, the Audi A2 was a production car from 1997-2005. What makes sets this Audi apart isn't necessarily its engine specs or performance profile, but the multiple radical departures from typical Audi design. Built from the ground up as a 5-door passenger vehicle, the A2 was the first purpose built economy car in Europe designed to travel 100 kilometers on less than 3 litres of fuel.
To accomplish this ambitious goal, Audi built the A2 with an all aluminum frame, reducing its weight to less than a thousand kilos. The smaller displacement motor, an automatic gearbox, narrower tyres, and innovative interior and exterior design helped them achieve their goal of a car that could indeed "transport four people from Stuttgart to Milan on a single tank of petrol."
The aluminum "space frame" wasn't the only thing special about the Audi A2. It also made exceptional use of its interior space, seating even taller adults in the back seat without making the space feel cramped in terms of headroom or elbow room. It also allowed for some impressive boot space, with 390 litres (13.8 cu. ft.) available for luggage and travel supplies. The A2 design team also made it a goal to create "a small Audi, not a cheap Audi", which meant customers wouldn't have to sacrifice quality in exchange for its better fuel economy and diminutive size.
To this end, they installed a 1.2 litre TDI motor that achieved 61 PS, which averaged about 3 litres to 100 km. in fuel economy. In spite of its small displacement, the A2 was actually tremendous fun to drive thanks to its turbocharger, and if you weren't overly concerned with fuel economy it was a treat to motor around busy streets without spending a fortune on fuel.
Further adding to this unusual design, Audi installed a service hatch on the front end for oil and washer checks, allowing technicians or owners to access these dipsticks and refill lines without the need for removing the bonnet, which was locked into place and removable rather than hinged. It's another quirk of the design that has made this a somewhat obscure but still popular Audi with compact collectors and fans of hot hatchbacks.
The first run of Audi A2's only sold about 180,000 units altogether. The small size, economy features, and appearance of the A2 turned away many who sought the Audi name for performance and style, and their initial impression of the A2 was an abrupt departure from Audi's usual production cars.
This little car still had some tricks up its sleeve, as those who took an A2 for a test drive immediately discovered its tiny frame was full to brimming of Audi soul. A2's were a tiny hatchback people mover that was an absolute scream to drive. The combination of a turbocharged diesel with the ultralight aluminum frame provided a truly unique driving experience that even critics praised.
Following its debut, Audi quickly offered customization options for the A2 that included larger displacement petrol and diesel motors including the 1.4L TDI that could push out 90 PS and made the economical A2 even more fun to drive.
The turn of the millennium saw petrol burning motors including the 1.4L 16V (74 PS) and 1.6L FSI S-Line model (110 PS), both of which made this tiny econobox car into a screamer of a hot hatchback. While the last A2 rolled off the line in 2005, they remain one of the best compact offerings by Audi. They may have been built for fuel economy and practicality, but they still have every bit of fire and flash that has made Audi hatchbacks heavyweight contenders in the world of compact cars.
